Ultrabook: a game between an Acer Aspire S3 and an Asus UX31E
Our colleagues of AnandTech propose us a game of Ultrabook with an Aspire S3 from Acer on the one hand, and one Asus UX31E the other.
Both are models of 13.3 inches, they embark a Core i7 (2637M for the first and the second 2677M), they have 4 GB of RAM and a SSD 256 GB s – ATA 6 Gbps.
What distinguishes: Asus model incorporates a USB 3.0, the definition of the screen is pushed to 1600 x 900 pixels and the battery is a 48 WHr model. For these elements, Acer is merely two USB 2.0 ports, 1366 x 768 pixels for the slab and 38 Wh to ensure the autonomy of his machine.
On paper, the UX31E hand with a fairly comfortable, remains whether it confirms to the final. Verdict?
PS Vita: the fault of the “Hello World” of Teck4 shows video
Sentence available to the Japan, the PS Vista of Sony, which seems to know a few concerns, must also face the small malignant trying to use it for other purposes than to operate games sold by the manufacturer.
And this has not been long since one learns that a Japanese developer, Teck4, have already managed to show a famous “Hello World”, to prove in video:
The result of the operation of the console emulation, the exploited fault being of type “buffer overflow”. In short, the security of the console is not yet completely broken. But how long will it take?
The German future Award awarded 2011 a team on organic electronics (electronic)

The German future 2011 award an award team on organic electronics
A team of Saxon research conducted by Karl Leo, Jan-Blochwitz Nimoth and Martin Pfeiffer is the prize winner of the German future 2011. With this award, the Federal President honours each year “actors whose creativity, knowledge and skills to develop compelling research solutions leading to marketable products”. The German President Christian Wulff and decorated the team for its project “organic electronics – more light and energy from thin layers of molecules”. A prize of 250,000 euros, the team got in ahead of two other projects in the final.
The winning project is thus based on the development of materials and techniques of doping contributing to optimize yields of organic electronics, especially in the production of Smart chips or light-emitting diodes designed polymer [1]. These new electronic components are therefore developed carbon based. These materials have insulating characteristics (like plastic) and their semiconductor properties could be considerably increased by doping with certain other materials, as shown in the Dresden team. Potential applications are enormous: as these organic components can be deposited on flexible substrates, they allow a series of new uses, for example to develop screens, electronic sheets and flexible solar panels, or embeddable intelligent systems in textile still.
Fundamental research work conducted at the Technical University of Dresden (Saxony), Institute of applied photophysics research, which Karl Leo is Director. At the application level, Leo also leads the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IMPS) of Dresden, the Fraunhofer model, helping to develop links with industry. Thus, after fundamental phase, manufacturing processes have been developed at the IPMS, then transferred in R & D industrial with rising SMEs of domain, Novaled AG and Heliatek GmbH, including Jan-Blochwitz Nimoth and Martin Pfeiffer are directors, respectively, scientific and technical. It is the triptych University – application centre – industry, which is the heart of the Fraunhofer model, which is rewarded here [2].
The President congratulated not only the winners, but also the other two nominated projects, owned the “circle of the best” he [3].

[1] The OLED are light-emitting diode, organic polymer, offering features smoothness and image quality, superior screen liquid crystal (LCD) while achieving a very high density of pixels.
[2], Each head of Department in a Fraunhofer Institute has also above a Research Chair at the Technical University local (strengthening the basic research – applied research link). Downstream, the Fraunhofer institutes must generate contract about 80% of their budgets through contracts with industry, which represents a powerful vector of transfer.
[3] two other nominees projects are those of Stefan Gehrig and Clemens Rabe, Uwe Franke, Daimler AG (Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg) with their project “Vision in 6 d – identify threats more quickly than humans”, and Hansjörg Lerchenmüller, Klaus-Dieter Rasch and Andrew W Bett (Soitec Solar GmbH, AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH, and Fraunhofer Institute for the solar energy systems)(, Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg) for their project “The sunlight concentrated – for efficient use”.
9 Firefox for Android: faster, a new INterface for shelves
A few hours after the launch of the final version of Firefox 9 for Windows, Mac and Linux, it is the turn of the Android update to version. In addition to routine optimizations at the level of performance with, for example, a faster startup of the application, Mozilla Announces fully reviewed and corrected its interface to the shelves.
Indeed, it takes a different appearance depending on whether you are in portrait mode or landscape mode. In the first case, your various tabs are placed on the top of the browser, as on Firefox for PC, while in the second case they are placed on the left by displaying a thumbnail of the web site in question.
A presentation that seems relatively convenient since you can simply move from one page to another using the thumb of your left hand. Note that you can just go full-screen mode by dragging your finger from right to left.
Video of official presentation has been online, it allows to better appreciate the new interface available for shelves:Mozilla then announces support for the HTML5 Forms API to simplify the management of the forms on a web page. In addition, Firefox for Android supports the “HTML5 Input Tag for Camera Access”, which allows website developers to use the optical sensor of your smartphone or your tablet. Therefore, it is for example possible to take pictures and scanner codes-bars without the need to leave the browser.
Spotify arrives on BlackBerry, but for some smartphones only
Via his official blog, Spotify has announced the availability of its application for RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones. Reminder, for Android and iOS versions are available for a long time.
If the wait was long for many users, the result is for the less surprising. Indeed, the list of devices compatible with the application is relatively brief and does not include the latest models.
Here are five officially supported smartphones:
- Bold 9000
- Bold 9700
- Bold 9780
- Curve 8520
- Curve 9300
If the absence of the P9981 can easily be understood, however the Torch 9800 Bold 9900 and the tablet manufacturer PlayBook are more difficult to justify. Indeed, these two phones were launched some time ago by RIM.
Also note that the editor said that only smartphones using type GSM mobile networks are compatible. CDMA versions cannot take advantage of the Spotify application on their phone.
These 2012: for Microsoft, it will be the last time
Microsoft said that coming to CES in Las Vegas early January 2012 certainly would last. The firm of Redmond, via one of its blogs, claims that the dates at which the largest world exhibition in High Tech is correspond at all to the schedule of its own launches.
(credit: Microsoft)
True really coincided that the last strategic launches of Microsoft: Windows 7 was launched on 22 October 2009, while for Windows Phone 7 was on October 27, 2010. On the Xbox expected renewal, it doubt it’s on another show that will be the major announcements: the E3. Indeed, the latter is aimed above all to the world of video game.
Also, one can think of the next launch of Windows 8, which should take place somewhere in the third quarter of 2012. For the software giant partners, he did y then step much to show or demonstrate.
The interest is therefore very limited for Microsoft to continue to be a partner of luxury for this show… If this is of course support the industry as a whole, that it should continue through partnerships.
For their part, the organisers of these indicated to our colleagues from All Things Digital that they “wish a good continuation to Microsoft, and there are many companies who are interested in the location of their main booth”.
Band 800 MHz (4 G): SFR gets two blocks, Free Mobile no
It is now official: If Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile well received each last September a block of frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band, the song is as different to the band 800 MHz. SFR thus won the jackpot with two blocks of 5 MHz duplex (total 10 MHz), against a block of 10 MHz duplex for Orange and another block of 10 MHz duplex for Bouygues Telecom Free Mobile is therefore the biggest loser of the operation. It will, however, operate the SFR network through a law imposed by ARCEP homelessness.
Balance of the 4 G of the 800 MHz band frequency allocations
In the end, here is the balance sheet of 4 G licenses for the moment:
- SFR: 15 MHz duplex of the band 2.6 GHz for EUR 150 million, without obligation to welcome of MVNO, more 10 MHz duplex band 800 MHz for EUR 1.065 billion, with obligation to allow the MVNO. Total spent: EUR 1,215 billion.
- Orange: 20 MHz duplex of the band 2.6 GHz to 287 million euros, with obligation to welcome of MVNO, more 10 MHz duplex band 800 MHz to 891 million euros, with obligation to allow the MVNO. Total spent: 1,178 billion euros.
- Bouygues Telecom: 15 MHz duplex of the band 2.6 GHz for 228 million euros, with obligation to welcome of MVNO, more 10 MHz duplex band 800 MHz for 683 million euros, with obligation to allow the MVNO. Total spent: € 911 million.
- Free Mobile: 20 MHz duplex of the band 2.6 GHz to 271 million euros, with obligation to host MVNO, more a future of roaming in the band 800 MHz with SFR. Total spent: 271 million euros + agreement with SFR.
Balance of the 4 G of the 2.6 GHz band frequency allocations
In the end, the winner number one of these sales of frequencies is first State. With 936 million euros for the 2.6 GHz band and more than 2,639 billion euros for the 800 MHz band, the French State has thus collected the tidy sum of 3,575 billion euros, 2.5 billion expected initially.
The shot of poker of SFR
The other big winner is SFR, which, for an amount just greater than orange, found with two blocks of the band 800 MHz. Note however that the obligation to allow the MVNO in this band actually cancels the non-obligation in the other band.
Bouygues, with more than 300 million euros less than SFR, and 267 million less than Orange, may well have operated. Orange, he pays dearly its block D (better yet), while he was already the operator have the already for its block in the band 2.6 GHz as shown in the table above.
Free, the biggest loser?
Finally, Free Mobile, as expected, was already sufficient steps to combat the famous trio. The amount on the table has not been disclosed by ARCEP, but it is certainly less than that of Bouygues Telecom, unless Free Mobile commitments have been lower than those of Bouygues, which would have had the consequence of lowering his final note. But this scenario is unlikely.
Is so get little frequency a problem for Free Mobile? Unlike other operators, Free has currently no subscriber, except surprise, in will be not between 25 and 30 million as count Orange and SFR in a few years. Its spectrum needs will be well below the competition.
“It has everything that need us”
” You have no regrets.” “If it was thought that it was vital for us, it would have been more aggressive, and today is considered that it has everything that need us to ” has said Maxime Lombardini, the Director General of the Iliad group. However, as he put it perfectly, ” today “, Free Mobile needs not more frequencies that he has, either on the 3 G or 4 G elsewhere. But what about tomorrow? The 4 G licences should indeed ensure the future of the operators beyond 2020…
Success of its offers, Free Mobile will be dependent on roaming agreements that it signed with the 2 G and 3 G, Orange and SFR (or even of other operators) for the 4 G in a few years. Then he will have to know how much it will have to pay to get those rights of passage, and especially, what quality will be offered to its subscribers. The risk that Orange and SFR give priority to their subscribers rather than those of Free Mobile can exist, as the relationship between historical operators and the MVNO.
X 79: Intel updates its Rapid Storage Technology drivers
Intel has just published an update of its RST (Rapid Storage Technology) drivers, only destined for those who have a chipset X 79 of the mark.
No notes version is the program for this 3.0.0.3020 version which is available since little. Download, it happen at this address. Note in passing that the manufacturer indicates that a 2.1.18.0 of USB 3.0 of its motherboards drivers update (Renesas chip therefore) is also available here.
Galaxy Tab N: Samsung is successful in Germany
In the trial who opposed Samsung Apple on digital slate, there is the case of the Germany where two manufacturers stand head and go blow for blow. The Korean, whose Galaxy Tab sales are banned, has decided to review some points of the design of its Tablet star, Galaxy Tab 10.1, a model called Galaxy Tab N… but that is all too-like according to Cupertino, who had asked the blocking also last November.
Yesterday, a German judge ruled in first instance to the Court of Düsseldorf, and gives reason to Samsung: changes on the Tablet are sufficiently distinctive to no longer look like the Apple iPad. No blocking of the tablet should be on this retoqué model.
Remains that this notice does not throw the Galaxy Tab German sales ban. It will be the final axe, which will fall on February 9, 2012.
In the meantime, the sky began to clarify for the various trials by Apple on Samsung. After the Australia and the United States, it is the Germany that begins to release Korean of its penalty, even if the end of year holiday period and their monstrous volumes will be of course passed.
[Brief] After having bought IndexTank, LinkedIn opens its sources
There is little, LinkedIn bought out IndexTank, a company providing hosted search services. At the time, the new partners announced a continuation of activity for a period of six months, and an opening of the sources. It is now the case.
A way for customers of IndexTank, such as Reddit or Twitvid, able to turn to other services that exploit the project, but also to enable the community to improve the tool. Two projects have thus emerged on GitHub:
It is released under the Apache license (APL) 2.0.
